These are what are known as riffles and they have different lengths; some are longer and extend all the way around the pan, while there are others that are short in length. Some people are not too crazy about steel pans due to the types of riffles they have and that since they have a rounded design it is not as effective. And when dealing with water, some believe that it causes the same amount of turbulence from the water on both of the sides of the riffles and this causes them to not be as effective when it comes to trapping the gold.
